A friend of mine swears by the Mississippi pot roast. For those unfamiliar, it’s a chuck roast that’s prepared in a slow cooker with four other ingredients—a stick of butter, a package of ranch dressing mix, a packet of powdered brown gravy, and pickled pepperoncini peppers. She says it’s incredibly easy and yields tender tangy beef. It’s a staple in her home.

When I first saw the recipe, my inclination was to take this dish and cook beef with homemade ranch dressing instead of the packets. Others have also had this idea, such as the . . .
