The other day at the store, I was walking past a large display of fruit and a strong whiff of sweet cantaloupe hung in the air. I will confess that melons are not usually my favorite fruit, but the scent was so powerful I picked up a melon, saw that it had been grown in Texas, gave it a good thump, then put it in my basket.

Texas is one of the largest growers of cantaloupe and the most famous ones come from the arid West Texas desert town of Pecos. This one, however, was grown further South, near Marfa . . .
