Black-eyed pea gumbo

Black-eyed peas have long been the dish of choice for Texans on New Year’s Day. While this humble field pea was once considered poor-people food and not eaten by polite society, both my grandparents grew up on farms where they were a staple.

My grandmother has said that its reputation as a lucky food on the first of January hails from a simple source: if you still had black-eyed peas in January, then you were very fortunate to have a supply of food in this barren month, and you just might survive.
